Forget everything you think you know about traditional Kyoto. Just a ten-minute walk from Kyoto Station, an entirely new world has opened—the largest permanent teamLab museum in Japan, the “Biovortex.” This is not merely an exhibition; it’s a massive, 10,000-square-meter universe of immersive, interactive digital art. Prepare to step across the boundary of existence and recognition, and become part of a continuously shifting, living artwork that demands you leave your camera—and your sense of reality—behind.
The Universe of Existence: 50+ Immersive Masterpieces
- Explore over 50 immersive works, including major new and previously unreleased installations unique to Kyoto.
- Experience the art with your entire body in themed zones like the physically active “Forest of Motion.”
- Witness the museum’s core concept: where the self, the environment, and the art exist as one continuous, flowing entity.
Becoming Part of the Art
The central theme here is the dissolution of boundaries. teamLab’s art challenges the idea of separate objects, showing us a world that is fluid, continuous, and shaped by our own recognition. I was completely mesmerized by the Massless and Formless Sculpture, a sea of shifting bubbles that seems to repair and maintain itself even as you push through it. It makes you feel incredibly small yet fundamentally connected. This is an experience designed not just to be seen, but to be lived, reminding you that your existence is intrinsically linked to your environment.

Playful Innovation and Collaboration
Beyond the deep philosophical works, the museum offers incredible fun for all ages. I loved diving into the “Forest of Motion,” especially the room with the High-Speed Spinning Bouncing Balls where I was literally jumping and rolling through a playground of light and color! And for families, the Learn & Play! Future Park section is brilliant, allowing children (and me!) to draw their own creations, scan them, and watch them come to life on the massive digital walls. Don’t forget the Sketch Factory to turn your art into a physical souvenir!
