Yanaka Ginza: A Nostalgic Journey to the “Shitamachi” Heart

Yanaka Ginza, a shopping street crowded with people snacking on the go.
The Yanaka Ginza district, famous for its lively street-food scene.

While Tokyo races toward the future, Yanaka Ginza remains lovingly frozen in time. This is the Tokyo of the 1950s—a narrow shopping street filled with family-run stalls, artisanal crafts, and a slow-paced warmth that reminds you what community really feels like.

The Soul of Retro Tokyo

My Choice
  • Savor legendary street food like “menchi-katsu” and grilled rice crackers.
  • Browse unique handmade crafts and traditional Japanese paper (washi) in tiny boutiques.
  • Witness the most iconic sunset in the city from the famous “Sunset Steps.”

Living History on Every Corner

Yanaka escaped the bombings of WWII, preserving its historic atmosphere. As I stroll through, I love watching the interaction between shopkeepers and locals who have known each other for decades. It’s the best place to experience “Omotenashi” in its most authentic, unpolished, and heartwarming form.

The Famous Yuyake Dandan

The “Yuyake Dandan” (Sunset Steps) at the end of the market provide a cinematic view of the shopping street below. As the sun dips low, the street lanterns begin to glow, creating a golden-hour atmosphere that is a photographer’s dream. It’s the perfect spot to end your day with a local beer in hand.

Your Guide to Memorable Experience

STEP
Come with an empty stomach! The street is famous for “tabearuki” (eating while walking)
STEP
Look for the “Seven Cats of Yanaka”—wooden cat carvings hidden on rooftops throughout the street.
STEP
Explore the nearby Yanaka Cemetery; it’s a beautiful, park-like space where famous figures rest.
Among the seven “lucky cats,” two exceptionally large ones are in a beckoning pose.
